The story
Frank Ocean began as a for-hire songwriter in Los Angeles, joined Odd Future, and then released channel ORANGE in 2012 — an album that treated R&B as long-form narrative rather than a sequence of singles. Days before it arrived he published an open letter about falling in love with a man, a rare act in hip-hop at the time. He left Def Jam in 2016 and has worked independently since, releasing on his own schedule and largely on his own terms.
