The story
Chris Stapleton spent well over a decade as a Nashville staff songwriter — with cuts recorded by everyone from George Strait to Adele — and fronted the bluegrass band The SteelDrivers before releasing Traveller in 2015. A single televised performance with Justin Timberlake that year turned a songwriter's record into a platinum album overnight. His approach owes as much to Otis Redding and Ray Charles as to Merle Haggard.
