Hugh Tracey International has been producing kalimbas in South Africa since 1954, when ethnomusicologist Hugh Tracey designed the first Western-market kalimba based on the African mbira. Their instruments are tuned to Western diatonic scales while honoring the African tradition, and are exported worldwide to musicians, music therapists, and educators.
