What is A&R?
You'll see "A&R" all over this platform — and it's even in our name. Here's what it actually means, in plain language.
A&R stands for Artists & Repertoire
At a record label, A&R is the person — or team — responsible for finding new talent and helping shape it into music people love. They're the ear behind the artist: part talent scout, part coach, part producer, part connector. A&R Guru reimagines that role and puts the same ear in every musician's hands.
What an A&R person actually does
Four jobs, one mission: turn raw talent into music that finds its audience.
Discover talent
A&R is a scout — out in clubs, sifting through demos, listening for the one voice that stands out from the crowd.
Develop the artist
Raw talent isn't a finished act. A&R helps a musician grow — the songs, the set, the identity — into an artist ready to be heard.
Shape the sound
In the studio, A&R pairs the artist with the right songs and producers, helping craft the record people will remember.
Make the connections
A&R is the bridge — linking the artist to the label, the team, and ultimately the audience.
The classic example
In the 1960s, Peter Asher was half of the British duo Peter & Gordon, scoring hits like "A World Without Love." But his lasting legacy came from the other side of the glass.
As an A&R man — first heading A&R at The Beatles' Apple Records, then as a manager and producer — he discovered and produced James Taylor, and went on to guide Linda Ronstadt to superstardom, winning multiple Grammys for his production work.
That's A&R at its best: the perfect ear, turning raw talent into legends.
John Kalodner
The A&R ManAnother classic example
John Kalodner started out writing about music, then joined Atlantic Records as an A&R man in the mid-1970s, where he signed Foreigner. In 1980 he became the first A&R hire at David Geffen's new label, Geffen Records.
That is where the develop-and-shape half of the job shows up most clearly. He brought a broken-up Aerosmith back to the original line-up and paired them with outside co-writers, and the records that followed — Permanent Vacation and Pump — were the biggest of their career. He repositioned Whitesnake for American radio and gave Cher a second act as a rock singer.
He is also the reason A&R people are visible at all: album sleeves carried the credit "John Kalodner: John Kalodner," and the white suit and the long beard made a behind-the-glass job into a public one. A&R Guru brings that same instinct — discover, develop, shape, connect — to every musician on the platform.
